Police shot dead 556 last year – stats

The police shot dead 556 people in 2008/2009, the highest number in

12 years, Beeld newspaper reported today.

The report was quoting statistics released by the Independent

Complaints Directorate (ICD) at an Institute for Security Studies (ISS) event in


In the year 2008/2009, the ICD said the police had shot dead 556

people, compared to 420 in 2007/2008.

That was a significant rise from years before – between 2003/2004

and 2006/2007, the number of people shot dead by the police ranged between 281

and 375.

In 1997/1998, the police shot dead 458 people.

Last year’s number was the highest in 12 years, the ISS session


ISS senior researcher Johan Burger said he believed the police were

merely responding to rising levels of violence.

He said he was not convinced that there was a link in the increase

in fatal shootings and statements by politicians that the police should shoot to
