Policeman critical after Heidelberg gunfight

2011-05-28 08:39

A police officer was critically wounded and three suspected house robbers killed in a shootout in Heidelberg last night, Gauteng police said.

A fourth man was arrested, Constable Tinoane Sonopo said.

The men allegedly broke into a house at around 7.30pm in Romyn Street in the Rensburg area, held the elderly couple inside at gunpoint and ransacked the place. A member of the family who was outside the property saw what was happening and called the police.

“Police entered the house and confronted the suspects. There was a shootout, during which one police officer was shot in the neck and shoulder. He was taken to Union Hospital and is critical,” said Sonopo.

Four firearms were recovered.
