Political murder claims hinder police

2011-09-13 14:20

Hasty claims about murders being politically motivated could hinder police investigations into such crimes, KwaZulu-Natal community safety MEC Willies Mchunu said today.

“We call on political leaders at all levels to be cautious and refrain from making statements that will create an impression that a particular killing is politically motivated, because that could affect police investigations.”

Mchunu said political parties should allow the police to conduct their investigations.

“What has emerged, however, is that even before the police conclude their investigation and find the motive behind a killing, political parties tend to claim their members are murdered for political reasons.”

Department spokesperson Kwanele Ncalane said such speculation created unnecessary tensions and made people afraid to help police catch the perpetrators.

“We are saying these speculations hinder police investigations because the police end up not getting the kind of co-operation they need.”
