Pope hopes for peaceful Euro ‘12

2012-06-08 14:06

Pope Benedict XVI hopes this year’s Uefa European Football Championship will take place in an atmosphere of peace and joy, noting that the event not only brought together organisers, players and fans, but also the entire society.

The championship starts today with co-hosts Poland taking on Greece, 2004 Euro champions.

Kick-off is at 6pm.

“It is necessary to make every effort so that the European Football Championship could be held in an atmosphere of peace and true joy,” reads a telegram from the German pontiff to the head of the Roman Catholic Church in Poland, archbishop Jozef Michalik today.

“The Church also does not remain indifferent to this event, especially to the needs of believers participating in it.

“I regard with appreciation the information that liturgies and prayer meetings will be held during the championship,” the pope said.
