A Shanghai-based artist has found a unique way to pay tribute to Nelson Mandela.

One of the most iconic images of the former president is of him as a boxer in the 1950s, a trope first made famous by Drum magazine.

Now Phil Akashi has created a very clever Mandela boxing tribute. He has painted a giant portrait by putting paint on his boxing gloves and punching a wall 27?000 times.

“This symbolic and powerful new painting resides in the Shanghai Graffiti Park, and is surrounded by a mix of graffiti made by local street artists,” says Akashi on his website.

He’s also posted a video of the process of making the work.

The bold young boxer is emerging as a common theme in the iconography around Madiba as he enters his second month in hospital.

Just a few weeks ago South African sculptor Marco Cianfanelli’s sculpture of Mandela shadowboxing was erected in Johannesburg.
