Porsche planning cross-over car

2010-06-25 14:03

Porsche, now a division of Volkswagen, is planning a cross-over

model that would be more compact than its bullish Cayenne sport utility vehicle,

German newspaper the Handelsblatt said today.

Originally a maker of just two sports-car models, Porsche later

added the SUV and the Panamera sedan to its range.

Porsche has said its target is to increase annual unit sales to 150

000 vehicles by adding a fifth model.

Handelsblatt quoted sources inside the company but gave no details

about the off-road vehicle, though it would likely be cheaper than the Cayenne.

Audi, another Volkswagen subsidiary, already makes such a vehicle, the Q5.

Scaled-down SUVs, which are closer to ordinary road cars, are

described in the industry as cross-overs and appeal to family customers seeking

something with a sportier look than a station wagon.

Porsche turnover jumped in the quarter to April 30 thanks to strong

sales of the Panamera.

Porsche’s two sports car families are the 911 and the

Boxster/Cayman range.
