Positive start for Brazil

Pre-tournament favourites Brazil laboured to a 2-1 victory against

a resilient Korea DPR to lead the standings in Group G tonight – after Portugal

and Ivory Coast yielded a goalless draw earlier in the day.

The first goal came from an unlikely source, Maicon, whose intended

cross tricked the keeper to give Brazil a lead against the run of play in the

55th minute. Elano’s well-taken 72nd minute effort settled the business on an

ice-cold Ellis Park.

JI Yun Nam pulled one back for the Asians at the dead.

The Koreans had deployed five defenders to police Brazil’s attack,

spearheaded by Luis Fabiano and Robinho.

However, the clustered rearguard became redundant in the second

half as the five-time champions snatched the tie in a rather cruel
