Potgieter seeking a happier ending to milestone match

2012-08-29 14:17

The last time Blue Bulls captain Dewald Potgieter celebrated a milestone, there was no fairytale as the Stormers upset the Bulls Super Rugby side 19-14.

With a change of competition comes fresher perspective and Potgieter, who will play for the Blue Bulls for the 50th time in the Currie Cup against Western Province on Saturday evening, said he wanted a happier ending.

“It is a nice milestone, but it is more important for me that the team plays well,” Potgieter said.

“Incidentally I played my 50th Super Rugby game against the Stormers here and we ended up losing that game. I need to forget that game completely and it will only be really worth it if the team puts in a good performance.”

Having blitzed the Sharks with a rather un-Bulls like running game, coach Pine Pienaar has shifted Clayton Blommetjies from wing to fullback.

Bok reject JJ Engelbrecht takes up Blommetjies’ position with Jurgen Visser dropping to the bench. Ulrich Beyers is the casualty and will play for the Under-21’s on Friday.

“Clayton is not really a fullback but he has done very well at wing,” Pienaar said.

“We thought that this week we are going to give him an opportunity at 15 so that if something happens with the centres, JJ will move to centre, where he played most of his Super Rugby, with Clayton moving to wing and Jurgen to fullback.”

With the Lions dominating the Western Province scrum, it would be an excellent set piece attacking point.

Pienaar acknowledged that his side do not have a scrum as potent as the Lions’, but it is a facet he hoped his side would take advantage of.

“The Lions have one of the best scrumming packs in the Currie Cup and they scrummed well in Super Rugby,” Pienaar said.

“We know what they can bring in terms of tighthead and looseheads but it is a unit focus and all eight forwards have to scrum well. We must make sure that we don’t get penalised at scrum time.”
