Prasa told to pay injured man R3.8m

2014-04-29 08:25

The North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria has ordered the Passenger Rail Agency of SA (Prasa) to pay a man who was injured in a train accident more than R3.8 million.

Tobias Maluleka was 17 years old and travelling to Wonderboom mall by train when it was hit from behind near Akasia station in April 2011, The Star reported today.

He sustained injuries to his head and was left with a deformed arm. Doctors testified that because of the deformity, he could not carry heavy objects, which limited his employment prospects.

He was also unable to complete his matric because he could no longer do garden work, which paid for his schooling. He could also not cope with his studies after the accident.

Maluleka wanted to become a soldier, but this was not possible. He is currently unemployed.

The court ordered Prasa to pay him R3.6 million for future loss of earnings, and additional payments for medical expenses and damages.
