Prasa ‘will not comment’ on threats

2011-05-27 13:05

The Passenger Rail Agency of SA (Prasa) said today that it will not comment on reports that its CEO was being threatened by crime syndicates for cracking down on those operating within the agency.

“We are not confirming or denying [that CEO Lucky Montana has been receiving threats], but we have given our response to Parliament and that is that,” said Prasa spokesperson Nana Zenani.

“We are not prepared to give comment on the matter as it is of a sensitive nature,” she said.

The claim of threats was contained in a statement by Transport Minister S’bu Ndebele.

In a written reply to a parliamentary question by DA MP Manny de Freitas yesterday, Ndebele said that because of threats faced by Montana – including his car being followed on a number of occasions by unknown people – it was decided that he needed continuous security protection.

Prasa loses more than R70 million a year to various forms of organised crime including rail and cable theft, vandalism, ticket fraud and cash heists on railway stations.

When replacement costs were included, this increased to between R200 million and R300 million.
