Premier to help bury stampede victim

2012-01-17 13:13

Gauteng premier Nomvula Mokonyane will help with the burial of Gloria Sekwena, who died in a recent stampede at the University of Johannesburg.

“Mokonyane will assist the Sekwena family with various services, such as counselling and transporting the mourners to the cemetery,” department spokesperson Xoli Mngambi said.

“The assistance will not be in the form of money... so we cannot disclose the amount to be spent in the process.”

Mngambi said the assistance would be a joint operation by Mokonyane, the Mogale City Municipality, and the West Rand District Municipality.

Sekwena (47) will be buried on Saturday at Sterkfontein cemetery.

She died in the stampede last week while accompanying her son Kgositsile (19) to see him through the application processes.

The UJ management has offered to pay for Kgositsile’s studies.
