President? Where is the president?

2011-07-30 11:05

President Jacob Zuma has been to Juba, Khartoum, he’s hosted a Tanzanian president, he’s been on a fact-finding mission on health matters in Limpopo and he’s even been bestowed the Freedom of the City by Makana municipality in Grahamstown.

But during all these public functions, he has not taken up the opportunity to assure the 50 million South Africans that he is still in control.

So much has happened in the past few months and the country needs to hear that its commander-in-chief has his sight on all developments.

Public Protector Thuli Madonsela issued two reports into the police lease scandal and nothing has happened to the people fingered in the reports – Public Works Minister Gwen Mahlangu-Nkabinde and Police Commissioner Bheki Cele.

Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Minister Sicelo Shiceka is still on leave despite reports that he used public funds to visit a girlfriend languishing in a foreign jail.

The criminal justice cluster was nearly brought to its knees by the police investigation into Madonsela’s conduct, the probe of whistle-blower Willie Hofmeyr and tensions at the National Prosecuting Authority.

Several media statements were made on these issues, yet we still haven’t heard from President Zuma. We need to hear from you, Mr President!
