Principal suspended after using school fees to fund trip

2013-05-01 12:56

The principal of Westridge High School in Roodepoort was suspended for two months without pay after he used school funds for an all-expenses paid trip to Zimbabwe.

According to the The Star today, Gauteng Education MEC Barbara Creecy told the legislature yesterday that principal Sydney Mashige attended the weddings of two couples, with the treasurer of the school governing body (SGB), Smanga Toli, in December 2011.

It was unclear what relationship the couples had with the school. They used around R27 000 of school funds.

The authorisation of the expenditure was announced by SGB chairman, Mike Thusi, in a notice on the school’s letterhead on November 21 2011.

Thusi said: “Both delegates are to be fully funded for their travelling and three nights’ stay in Zimbabwe and both will be given a stipend of R850 per day for three days.”

Creecy said action had been taken against Mashige.

“The principal was suspended without pay for two months. The department managed to recover R66 300,” Creecy was quoted as saying.
