Prisoners’ rights activist Golden Miles Bhudu has been arrested for wearing a prison uniform.

Bhudu was arrested today “following his unauthorised use of prescribed sentenced offender uniform”, the correctional services department said in a statement.

The department quotes the Correctional Services Act, which states that any person who wears the uniform without permission, or wears anything resembling it, may be fined or sentenced to a maximum of 18 months in prison.

Police were investigating the matter.

Bhudu’s organisation, the South African Prisoners’ Organisation for Human Rights (Sapohr), approached the North Gauteng High Court earlier this year to stop elections until the IEC had registered all voters in prison.

Bhudu has also teamed up with Julius Malema’s Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) in the run-up to elections.
