Promotion policy included crooked cops – report

2012-03-01 09:35

Police officers facing criminal or disciplinary charges have been considered for promotion or promoted since 2006, according to a report.

The Cape Times newspaper quoted Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa as saying in Parliament that even those who had been found guilty of such charges were not excluded from promotion possibilities.

In answering questions yesterday, he said these provisions were found in the SA Police Service standing orders, specifically the national instructions on promotions.

This provided that employees “against whom criminal or disciplinary investigations are pending or who have criminal convictions or findings of misconduct (against them) may be considered for promotion”.

“I am not happy with this situation,” the newspaper quoted him as saying.
