Prosecutor accused of fraud out on bail

2013-07-11 10:14

A senior prosecutor at the Durban Magistrates’ Court accused of soliciting a bribe has been granted R10 000 bail.

Phumzile Msimango (33) allegedly tried to solicit a R1 000 bribe from a senior counsel over a corruption and assault case the lawyer was handling.

She was arrested in the court on Tuesday.

Another prosecutor, Brend Groen, claimed that the senior counsel and Msimango were having a casual chat about the case, and that Msimango told him that the case could be made to disappear for a fee.

The amount of R1 000 was made available as a trap, and the money was handed to her.

Police arrived and found marked notes of R500 in her handbag and another R500 in Msimango’s office.

According to the report, Msimango worked for the National Prosecuting Authority for six years.

She said that, if convicted, Msimango could face a R500 000 fine or 15 years in jail.

Msimango would appear in court again on July 25.
