Alviro Petersen will replace the injured Graeme Smith in the Proteas squad for the ICC Champions Trophy tournament to be played in England and Wales from June 6 to June 23, Cricket SA (CSA) has announced.

“We have decided on a like-for-like replacement and Alviro is the obvious choice in this regard,” CSA selection convenor Andrew Hudson said today.

“He is a specialist opening batsman and also brings some very useful experience on board following the loss of both Smith and Jacques Kallis.

“In addition, he is in the form of his life, having made almost 500 runs in three English County Championship Division One matches for Somerset, including two centuries, at an average in the high 80s.”

Smith required surgery on a recurring left ankle injury while Kallis ruled himself out of the tournament, citing personal reasons.

The tournament would be played early in the English summer and Hudson envisaged bowling conditions would favour the seamers.

“Getting good partnerships up front is going to be paramount to success,” Hudson said.

“Petersen handled these conditions extremely well during our Test tour to England last year.”

Squad: AB de Villiers (c), Hashim Amla, Farhaan Behardien, JP Duminy, Faf du Plessis, Colin Ingram, Rory Kleinveldt, Ryan McLaren, David Miller, Morne Morkel, Alviro Petersen, Robbie Peterson, Aaron Phangiso, Dale Steyn, Lonwabo Tsotsobe
