Proteas eliminated from World T20

2012-10-02 14:42

South Africa have been eliminated from the World Twenty20 competition in Sri Lanka following Pakistan’s 32 run victory over Australia at the Premadasa stadium.

Pakistan’s victory today moves them to second in their Super Eight group on net-run rate behind Australia, with India and South Africa in third and fourth place respectively.

After a 10 wicket victory over Zimbabwe and 32 run win against Sri Lanka in a rain-reduced contest, South Africa moved into the Super Eight phase of the competition with high hopes of progression.

These immediately stalled following their two-wicket loss to Pakistan on Friday.

South Africa were then well-beaten by eight wickets by Australia on Sunday, meaning Australia had to beat Pakistan for South Africa to have any chance of progression to the semifinals.

The Proteas’ match against India today has been reduced to a dead-rubber for Gary Kirsten’s team, while India need a big victory to overhaul Pakistan to qualify for the semifinals.
