Protesters blockade roads in Newcastle

2010-02-16 10:37

Police fired rubber bullets to disperse thousands of people who

blockaded roads during a service delivery protest which turned violent in

Newcastle this morning.

“Scores of people blockaded roads and burnt tyres in Bloubosch

township in Newcastle. We had to use rubber bullets to disperse the crowd,” said

Capt Shoes Magudulela.

He said major roads linking Newcastle and other towns were

completely blocked by protesters who complained about the local municipality’s

poor service delivery.

Magudulela said the protesters had obtained a permit to march to

the Newcastle Municipal offices today.

He did not know why they decided to block roads instead of marching

“We are currently trying to negotiate with the leaders of the

protest to stop closing of roads,” said Magudulela.
