Protesters trash Durban streets

2011-08-17 11:34

Striking municipal workers trashed rubbish bins in Durban, leaving streets littered with garbage.

SA Municipal Workers Union (Samwu) members gathered at Durban’s Botha Park before moving to Curries Fountain stadium.

Bins were trashed as the protesters moved to the stadium.

They were expected to march to the Durban City Hall later today.

There was a heavy police presence at the stadium.

Samwu provincial secretary Jaycee Canana said the date of the march had been changed.

“It was supposed to take place on Friday but we have decided to change it today. We will march from Curries Fountain stadium to the Durban City Hall.”

A countrywide municipal worker strike began on Monday morning.

Samwu and the Independent Municipal and Allied Trade Union (Imatu) members were demanding an 18% or R2 000 wage increase, whichever is higher, and the SA Local Government Association was offering 6%.
