Protests follow Mabuza

2012-08-11 16:37

Mpumalanga has seen nearly 20 violent service delivery protests since February following Premier David Mabuza’s re-election as provincial ANC chairperson.

Some have been organised by a disgruntled ANC faction which lost out to Mabuza’s group on positions in the regional and provincial executive committees, as well as in government.

Those from the recent hot spots of Barberton, Thaba Chweu and Mbombela confirmed they spurred residents to protest about genuine service delivery failures to embarrass Mabuza.

A Matsulu township organiser who spoke on condition of anonymity said: “The ANC in this province is virtually run by one individual who appoints stooges with questionable credentials to positions. So, yes, it’s ANC members that are burning Mpumalanga and it’s not about to end.”

The disgruntled faction will invite Mabuza to a “cadres’ forum” later this month to heal the rifts, but if no agreement is reached the “protests will intensify”.
