The Free State government has applied for a state funeral for former premier Winkie Direko.

Direko died of a stroke in Universitas Private Hospital, Bloemfontein, on Friday after she complained of feeling sick the night before.

Provincial spokesperson Mondli Mvambi said Premier Ace Magashule’s office had asked the presidency for an official burial for the 82-year-old educator.

A memorial service would be held for her at the Mangaung Indoor Sport Centre in Bloemfontein on Thursday at 2pm.

Mvambi said this was decided after a meeting with her family today. The funeral would be held on Saturday.
