Public Protector Thuli Madonsela will investigate the Free State government’s controversial multimillion-rand website, the DA has said.

The Democratic Alliance had received confirmation from the Protector’s good governance and integrity office that it would investigate a complaint by the party, said Free State DA leader Patricia Kopane today.

She said the party had laid a complaint of wasteful expenditure in respect of Premier Ace Magashule’s website for the Free State government, which allegedly cost R47 million.

“The DA requested an executive ethics code investigation into possible violations by Magashule,” said Kopane.

She accused the premier of violating the code in his awarding of the contract for the website’s construction.

The provincial government said a total of 38 websites, and not only one, form part of the Free State’s multiyear integrated website project.

The project included websites for the 11 provincial departments, three provincial public entities and 24 municipalities, according to the provincial government.

City Press reported in March that the company that charged the Free State provincial government for its website design could lose its lucrative contracts as National Treasury sets its sights on the beleaguered province.
