Public Works DG suspended

2010-12-08 15:45

Public Works Director-General (DG) Siviwe Dongwana has been suspended, the department has announced.

A statement released by the department says Dongwana is being charged with alleged insubordination, dereliction of duty, failure to discharge official duties and bringing the department into disrepute.

Dongwana joined the department in May from accounting firm Deloitte, where he was director of enterprise risk services.

Minister Gwen Mahlangu-Nkabinde said Dongwana was presumed to be innocent until proven guilty.

She promised a transparent and fair disciplinary hearing, which would be completed within the three months.

Public works’ corporate services deputy director-general Sam Vukela will be acting DG for the next three months.

This will be Vukela’s second stint as public works DG.

He was appointed acting DG in November last year after the departure of another acting DG, Solly Malebye.

Malebye had been acting since the departure of Manye Moroka, who resigned in April last year following claims that he had received a bonus of over R200 000 from another state-owned entity, Servcon Housing Solutions.

Moroka was director at Servcon.

Public Works has had eight DGs (including acting) since 1999.

These also include businessman Thami Sokutu, Lydia Bici, government spokesperson Themba Maseko, the Presidency’s monitoring and evaluation DG, Dr Sean Phillips, and Zingi Ntsaluba.

Dongwana could not be reached for comment as his phone was switched off.
