Pupils injured in taxi-train crash

2012-03-15 15:15

Five schoolchildren were injured when a minibus taxi and a goods train collided at a level crossing on the border of Soweto and Roodepoort, Johannesburg.

The injured were taken to two hospitals, Johannesburg emergency services spokesperson Synock Matobako said.

No fatalities were reported.

The taxi was carrying about 16 children from West Ridge High School. The driver was not injured in the accident in Main Reef road today.

The police’s Captain Kay Makhubela said the driver was arrested at the scene for reckless or negligent driving and was taken to the Roodepoort police station.

“The taxi tried to cross the level crossing before the train came, but when he realised the train was already there, he tried to turn and the taxi got hit on left side.”

He said the five suffered minor injuries.

Metrorail spokesperson Tony Games said the train was from Transnet Freight Rail (TFR).

TFR spokesperson Molatwane Likhethe could not immediately be reached for comment.

Netcare 911 and ER24 paramedics were on the scene.
