The meeting held in Qunu today was a “highly sensitive” one and was only for the family, said nkosi Mfundo Mtirara, a relative of former president Nelson Mandela.

Mtirara, a senior member of the Madiba clan by tradition, refused to be drawn on what had been discussed during the meeting, which was reportedly called by Mandela’s eldest daughter, Makaziwe.

“Why are all these journalists here … this is a highly sensitive family meeting by the family,” said Mtirara, who is the chief of Matyenengqina, a village near Qunu.

“I cannot say anything about this meeting,” Mtirara said before driving off in a red VW Golf 5.

In the afternoon, a truck carrying an excavator was seen at Mandela’s Qunu property.

It was not clear why the excavator was there.

The truck offloaded it and left it inside the yard of the Qunu residence, facing what is believed to be the Mandela gravesite.

It had not moved by 5.30pm.
