R3 000 bail for couple accused of abusing baby

2014-05-20 09:39

A couple arrested for child abuse and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm have been granted bail by the Benoni Magistrates’ Court, Gauteng police said.

Lieutenant-Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said the couple appeared in court yesterday and was released on bail of R3 000 each.

“The case returns to court on July 11,” said Dlamini.

The seven-week-old baby, who was said to be recovering well, was in a place of safety.

According to The Star, the couple was arrested after the medical staff at the Linmed Netcare Hospital, who had been treating the child for bronchitis on May 7, alerted authorities to the infant’s injuries.

The baby had three broken ribs, a fractured knee and brain injuries.
