R35 million drug bust

2011-02-11 08:41

Police raided a home in Midrand, north of Joubrg, and seized an estimated R35 million in drug manufacturing equipment, chemicals and the finished product, tik, today, the Hawks said.

Colonel McIntosh Polela said police descended on the large home in Vorna Valley in the early part of this morning.

It had been turned into a drug laboratory, with the rooms filled with equipment, chemicals and the finished product, tik or methamphetamine.

No arrests were made but the police are searching for two Nigerian nationals.

The house was rented by a South African woman, the wife of one of the Nigerian nationals.

Polela said this was now a common method used to rent homes in the drug trade – foreign nationals married a local woman or enlisted a South African woman to rent a home for them.

The two people have also been linked to two other drug busts, a R1 billion drug bust in Brakpan and another drug bust in Kempton Park.
Investigations continue.
