R50 000 bid will rev up a good cause

2011-03-19 18:03

How much would you pay for a ride with Top Gear stunt driver The Stig? R5 000 or R10 000? How about R50 000?
That’s the price an unnamed woman paid for a birthday present to her fiance at the Top Gear charity auction this week.

The annual charity event hosted by the BBC Entertainment channel’s motoring show marked the launch of the four-day festival which ends today.

On auction were various motoring memorabilia. As for riding shotgun with racing legend David Coulthard and local motoring champion Jody Scheckter, one punter forked out R40 000 for Coulthard in the super Audi R8, while Scheckter fetched R30 000 to drive a bidder in the classic Ferrari F40.

Legendary race drivers Tiff Needal and Sabine Schmitz’s skills were also on auction.

While the amounts were reasonable, they were nowhere near last year’s six-figure numbers.

The highest bid fetched R110 000 for two tickets sponsored by Gabriel shock absorbers. Another set went for R30 000.

High-profile guests included Transnet chairman Mafika Mkhwanazi, mining executive Tshidi Madima, PR doyenne Edith Venter, businessman Vivien Natasen, Top Billing’s Jeannie D and racer Gugu Zulu.

The proceeds of the auction will once again be donated to the Sparrow Schools foundation, which supports Aids orphans. –  Additional reporting by Janine-Lee Gordon
