R800m fight the world wants

Boxing superstar Manny Pacquiao said he has yet to make a final decision on his next opponent this year.

Although he wanted a super fight against the undefeated Floyd Mayweather Jr, Pacquiao said he was not closing the door on other options.

“The Pacman” said he could go for the man nicknamed “Money” if the American boxer agrees to meet him in late May. He also wants a 50-50 purse split with Mayweather for the fight.

Former WBA light heavyweight champion Eddie Mustafa Muhammad said his venture, Yamani Sports and Entertainment, was prepared to offer over $100 million (about R805 million) for the Mayweather-Pacquiao clash.

Mayweather this week called on Pacquiao via Twitter, saying he is ready for May 5.

The American boxer, however, has yet to submit a formal fight offer to the Filipino champion.

Promoter Bob Arum said the soonest possible time for a Pacquiao-Mayweather fight would be some time in late May. If the super fight is held on May 5, as Mayweather demanded, it would most likely be held at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, which only seats about 16 500 people.

“In order to maximise revenue for the fight, you have to have a stadium larger than 16 500,” Arum said, adding they would need to build a temporary stadium for the fight to maximise the earnings.

“The temporary stadium wouldn’t be ready with any degree of certainty at the beginning of May. But it would be available at the end of May,” he said.
