R8m for ex-model injured in accident before wedding

2013-10-09 08:44

The High Court in Pretoria has ordered the Road Accident Fund to pay R8 million into a trust for a fomer model who was injured in a car accident in June 2009.

The money will be used to take care of 29-year-old Claudine Labuschagne’s needs for the rest of her life after she suffered severe brain damage and spinal injuries, the Pretoria News reported.

Labuschagne and her fiance, Johan van der Merwe, were returning from seeing their wedding planner when the accident took place on the Kimberley/Griekwastad road in the Northern Cape.

Van der Merwe swerved out for something in the road and lost control of the vehicle.

He died and Labuschagne was taken to hospital where she was in a coma for three months.

The woman also sustained a fractured spine, multiple rib fractures, and a chest injury.

Labuschagne was entirely dependent on round-the-clock help, the newspaper reported.

The accident happened five months before their wedding.
