RAF to pay youth R20m – report

2012-02-27 07:26

The Road Accident Fund will pay more than R20 million to a youth who was severely injured in two car accidents when he was a child.

The amount would cover medical costs for the 19-year-old for the rest of his life, the Eastern Cape-based newspaper reported on its website at the weekend.

The youth, from Mdantsane, in the Eastern Cape, was in a taxi crash when he was two weeks old and suffered a skull fracture and several head injuries when he was hit by a car at the age of 10 in 2003.

His lawyer Ben Niehaus told the Dispatch Online that the hospital folders after the second accident showed that the boy’s disfigurement and mental disability were caused by an earlier accident.

It was only then that Niehaus discovered the youngster had been in the taxi accident as an infant.

He had been propelled through the windscreen when the taxi crashed into an oncoming vehicle. His family had not sought legal help.

The youth suffered from epileptic seizures and mental retardation.
