Radio DJ’s arrest welcomed

2012-03-08 13:44

The arrest of DJ Gareth Cliff for speeding was welcomed today by Gauteng’s community safety MEC.

“By excessive speeding, the motorists are not only putting their lives in danger, but also endangering other road users,” MEC Faith Mazibuko said in a statement.

Mazibuko called on motorists, irrespective of their social status, to be cautious on the roads and warned that law enforcement would be on the lookout for those who broke the rules.

“Our roads are not a racecourse. For those that want to race, they must make use of places such as Kyalami... not our public roads.”

Cliff was arrested after he was caught driving at 183km/h in a 120km/h zone, near Pretoria, on Tuesday evening. He was later released on bail.

He appeared in the Centurion Magistrates Court yesterday. The case was postponed to March 15 because there was an inquiry into whether his licence should be suspended.

The case will continue in the Pretoria Magistrates Court. Cliff faces charges of excessive speeding and reckless or negligent driving.
