Radio Pretoria gets licence after 17 years

2010-11-20 07:18

Afrikaans station Radio Pretoria has been granted a five-year broadcasting licence by the Independent Communications Authority of SA (Icasa), after a 17-year wait.

“After a sustained battle of 17 years, Radio Pretoria (14.2 FM) has received its broadcasting licence,” the station’s media spokesperson Henk Joubert said.

“It is clearly written on the licence that the station will serve ‘an Afrikaner, farmer-based community’,” he said.

Icasa spokesperson Paseka Maleka confirmed the station was granted a long-term licence this week. It had been broadcasting on temporary licences for nearly two decades.

Joubert claimed the station had an audience of up to 750 000 listeners, many of whom were based abroad and tuned in via the internet.
