Ramaala in another Olympic milestone

2012-01-27 10:01

South African marathon legend Hendrick Ramaala has qualified for the London Olympics at the ripe age of 40 – a feat that also makes him the first local to appear in five Games.

The Central Gauteng Athletics runner clocked 2:12.12 at the Dubai Marathon today to be within the qualifying standard of 2:15.

Ramaala finished 19th, seven minutes behind the winner, Ayele Abshero of Ethiopia, who came home in 2:04.23.

The East African nation took nine places in the top 10. Kenya squeezed in at the fourth spot.

The London marathon will take place on August 12.
