Rea Vaya bus service resumes

2011-09-27 12:44

The Rea Vaya bus service in central Joburg will resume from this afternoon after an agreement was reached between unions, the bus operator Piotrans and the City of Joburg, they said in a joint statement.

The agreement included a basic salary of R6 550 a month, a once-off payment of R1 500 on return to work, a company contribution of 10% to a provident fund, and a guaranteed 13th cheque equivalent to a month’s salary, said Piotrans, the City of Johannesburg, labour federation Cosatu’s Gauteng branch and the SA Municipal Workers’ Union.

Also agreed to was a performance bonus of up to R600 and a voluntary medical aid contribution, they said.

They apologised to Rea Vaya users for the inconvenience caused by the bus drivers’ strike which started on August 1 and left 40 000 commuters looking for alternative transport for almost eight weeks.
