Recalling older players not the easy way out for Bafana

2011-11-19 17:57

Free State Stars coach Steve Komphela says Bafana Bafana supporters are looking for an easy way out by calling for the inclusion of Benni McCarthy (34) and Siyabonga Nomvethe (33) in the team.

Komphela has argued that this is a desperate solution to a long-term problem, that national coach Pitso Mosimane should use friendly matches to try different combinations upfront rather than recalling the two veterans.

After Bafana’s failure to qualify for next year’s Africa Cup of Nations, Bafana will not be idle as Safa is trying to organise a tournament for them. Already, Bafana are scheduled to play India in January.

Ordinarily, supporters’ calls would not be far-fetched, considering the scoring form of Orlando Pirates and Moroka Swallows strikers and Bafana’s impotence in front of goal.

But based on the duo’s age and the fact that Bafana will not play official games until June next year, it’s time to move forward and open a new chapter.

“The two players will be a short-term solution to arrest the current scoring situation, but this is a long-term problem and it’s time to move forward,” said Komphela.

“In fact, where will they be in June when the team starts with the qualifying rounds?”

He said it was time to throw other players in at the deep end so they could gain experience and exposure and understand Mosimane’s thinking. But he said the two veterans’ experience would come in handy to help youngsters settle into the team.

“They can be part of the team but only as part-timers to help the youngsters,” he said.

Not long ago supporters were over the moon after Mosimane discarded former captain Aaron Mokoena and Macbeth Sibaya. Is it a case of desperate times calling for desperate measures?
