Reconciliation & reconstruction have failed us

2009-10-30 10:53

How many more people must be victims of racism before things get

right? How many more must die as a result of racism-related attacks before

things can get right?

As much as people are saying the ruling party has had many years to

make things right in government, I say people have had enough time to get rid of

the racial syndrome because we have accommodated and tolerated such racial

attacks for a long time. It is not funny that a year will not pass without

witnessing such attacks on our people.

If we are not shot because we are mistaken as baboons, we are tied

behind a bakkie and dragged few kilometres along a tarred road. Maybe those who

say our government has failed are right because such things should not be

happening after so many years into our democracy.

We have suppressed our feelings and forgave when people were

assaulted and fed to the lions and some seem to take advantage of that.

Some might argue that this is not a result of racism, if not why

are such actions only happening to one colour within the rainbow nation? It is

more concerning to see such attacks coming from the young generation as well.

The cases of Skierlik shooter and the Reitz Four can only tell us that the

attacks will move from generation to generation, hence more harsh action is

needed because the “forgive and forget” in the name of reconstruction and

reconciliation have failed us in the past and still continue to fail us.

The decision by newly appointed UFS rector Jonathan Jansen in

pardoning the four students who humiliated five black staff members at the

University of the Free State in a filmed initiation-type ceremony is misguided

and misleading. Just because their case with the state is still on does not mean

the university should be irresponsible and fail to discipline these individuals.

After all there is no point in reconciling with people who can’t even apologise

for their actions.
