Reeva’s V-day gift for Oscar

2013-02-24 10:00

About 12 hours before her death, Reeva Steenkamp had a framed picture – with photos of Oscar Pistorius and herself – wrapped in red-striped wrapping paper.

“My boyfriend really enjoys Valentine’s Day,” she said, according to a shop assistant at Party Box in the Hazeldean Square shopping centre.

The centre is near the Silver Woods Estate where Steenkamp was shot and killed in Pistorius’ house early on Thursday morning.

The shop assistant, who wishes to remain anonymous, said she did not pay much attention to Steenkamp initially when she walked into the shop on Wednesday afternoon.

“She was just an ordinary, friendly customer.”

Steenkamp was looking for Valentine’s wrapping paper, which the store did not have, but the assistant said they had other paper.

Steenkamp then fetched a framed picture from her car so that it could be wrapped. She chose red-striped wrapping paper.

When the assistant saw the four photos of Steenkamp and Pistorius as a happy couple, she recognised Pistorius.

She did not say anything to Steenkamp about the photos.

“We joked about a woman having to buy something for her boyfriend if she wants to get something on Valentine’s Day.

“She was very friendly.”

Willie Viljoen, owner of Party Box, said Pistorius was a regular customer in the centre and he had also seen Steenkamp there before.

“She was an attractive woman.”
