Report of nepotism at regulator

2013-03-04 09:40

Railway Safety Regulator chief executive Nkululeko Poya has allegedly spent taxpayers’ money to hire his friends and relatives.

Joburg daily, The Star, reported today that Poya allegedly instructed interview panels to hire his preferred candidates, including his sister-in-law as well as the mother of his child.

After taking office in 2011, Poya allegedly appointed Tamia Sopotela, the mother of his child, as an inspector in the Durban office on a package of R500 000 a year.

He also allegedly hired his friend Mandla Ndudane with whom he had worked in the Eastern Cape transport department, despite a vetting firm’s warning that he not be hired because his honesty and integrity were questionable, The Star reported.

Ndudane had informed the regulator of a negligent driving conviction, but not of an assault conviction in 1995, one of negligent loss of firearm in 1996, and another of drunk driving in 2006.

The regulator’s spokesperson, Babalwa Mpendu, told The Star proper procedures had been followed in all the appointments.
