A police reservist was arrested in Grobblersdal in connection with the murder of a lieutenant colonel.

The 32-year-old man was arrested yesterday after fingerprints found inside a state vehicle positively linked him to the murder of lieutenant-colonel Dimpe Joseph Mokabane, Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi said.

Mokabane (49) was still wearing his uniform when he was on his way home from a crime-prevention operation in Groblersdal on Saturday.

The murder took place at Mamphokgo Road next to Matilu village.

On Tuesday, three men accused of stealing Mokabane’s firearm appeared in the Motetema Magistrates Court.

Lieutenant-colonel Mohale Ramatseba said Alred Seopela (39) and Lehutso Dithoto Mashegoana (40) were accused of stealing the firearm.

Johannes Moraba (44) appeared for possession of an unlicensed firearm.

Their trial was postponed to Tuesday, July 26.

Limpopo provincial commissioner lieutenant-general Amon Mashigo said he was thankful the suspect was no longer a threat to the community.

“I hope this provides some closure for the families and colleagues of our fallen officer. I appreciate the tireless effort of the everyone in the search for the suspect.

“Tragedies like this highlight the tremendous unity of our law enforcement community. We should now focus our attention on providing comfort and support to those who have lost a loved one.”

The reservist would appear in the Motetema Magistrates Court on Monday.

Lieutenant-colonel Mokabane will buried in full military honours tomorrow in Nebo, Mulaudzi said.
