Residents trap and kill ‘copper thief’

2010-09-28 13:32

A suspected copper thief was beaten to death, allegedly by a group of Mpumalanga villagers near Siyabuswa.

“The residents of Mabuyaneni village set a trap by hiding on the street corners in search of the copper cable thieves around 3am,” police spokesperson Constable Busi Mtshweni said.

“They saw the three men in the street cutting cables that supply electricity from the street poles into the yards of homes and gave chase.”

One of the men was caught a few metres away, but his alleged accomplices outran the group.

“After a vigorous interrogation, the suspect confessed to the crime and led the crowd to the nearby bush, where he showed them some of the copper cables that he apparently stole with his friends in the past.

“The residents beat him with stones and various objects until he collapsed and died. Police found his body lying on the ground next to a pile of copper cables.”

An inquest docket was opened.
