Return of witty Diaz overrides vulgarity

Bad Teacher (Ster Kinekor) has some elements I liked. Sure it’s too vulgar most of the time, but there are glimpses from Cameron Diaz of that wonderful comedienne who brought the house down in the wonderfully quirky There’s Something About Mary.

I am not saying this script should even be kept in the same drawer as the Farrelly brothers classic, but it is nice to see Diaz doing something with a bit of wit after her appearance with the dreaded Seth Rogen in The Green Hornet and her flop with master bellyflopper Ashton Kutcher in What Happens in Vegas.

In this Diaz is Elizabeth, a gold-digger who has to go back to her teaching job when her betrothed finds out she only wants his money.

Devastated, she spends her time trying to find a new sugar daddy, which she thinks will be easier if she has a boob job. She can’t afford one, so she starts coming up with inventive ways to raise the money.

Thrown into the mix is Justin Timberlake as a naïve substitute teacher from a wealthy family; and the school’s most dedicated teacher Amy (Lucy Punch), who sees right through Elizabeth, but can’t convince anyone else how bad she is.

From the writers of The Office, Bad Teacher is a bit of subversive fun that unfortunately takes refuge in vulgarity in the end, but at least tries to do something different.
