“Baba, can’t you sleep?”

These were Reeva Steenkamp’s final words, just minutes before she was gunned down in Oscar Pistorius’ bathroom.

This was the dramatic testimony of Pistorius, who today broke his silence about the events of the night he killed Steenkamp.

Minutes after telling Steenkamp that he couldn’t sleep, he got up to move two fans in from the balcony.

These, Pistorius said, had been placed there to “draw the cool air into the room”.

He then drew the curtains and picked up a pair of Reeva’s jeans to cover a flashing light on his stereo.

“At this point I heard the window open in the bathroom ... it sounded like the window sliding open then hitting the frame.”

Pistorius’ lawyer, Barry Roux, then asked: “What did you think?”

“My lady, that was the moment everything changed,” Pistorius replied.

Moving as fast as he could, he fetched his firearm so he could move to the passage, putting himself “between the person who’d gained access to my house and Reeva”.

He said that he whispered to Reeva to get down and call the police.

As he approached the passage to his bathroom, Pistorius said he was “overcome with fear” and began screaming for the people to get out of his house.

As he moved through the passage and neared the bathroom he stopped screaming, afraid he would alert people to his presence.

“Just before I got to the bathroom, I heard a door slam. It could only have been the toilet door.

“It confirmed there was a person or people inside,” said Pistorius.

The testimony will continue after lunch.
