Revision: a 2013 matric result overview

Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga is preparing this evening to announce the 2014 matric results. To help you understand what’s changed, improved or declined, here are some key facts from the last round of matric results, which Motshekga revealed in January 2013.

1. In January 2013, the pass rate climbed from 73.9% the previous year to 78.2%;

2. Motshekga said she was delighted by the 2013 results, which were the best the country’s matrics had recorded since 1994;

3. The 2013 results were an increase of 17.6 percentage points since 2009 (60.6%), when Motshekga took over as minister;

4. The number of matriculants who qualified to study towards bachelor’s degrees was 30.6% last year;

5. About 551 schools achieved a 100% pass rate in 2013. Nine recorded a 0% pass rate;

6. 67 855 distinctions were achieved in 2013, up from 55 650 in 2012;

7. Motshekga was particularly pleased that the pass rates in two crucial subjects, maths and physical science, had jumped: “The pass rate for maths is 59.1% in 2013. This is an improvement from the 54% in 2012. The pass rate for physical science is 67.4%, from 61.3% in 2012,” she said at the time.

8. The Free State’s matrics were top of the class, scoring an 87.4% pass rate. The North West was second and Gauteng third.

9. The Eastern Cape rounded out the bottom of the table, its matrics securing a 64.9% pass rate.
