Rhino poaching on the rise

To date, a total of 405 rhino have been poached this year, an increase of 21.6% from last year, SA National Parks said today.

This was compared to 333 rhinos poached last year, SANParks said in a statement.

From 2009 to last year, the incidence of poaching rose by 173% and from 2008 to 2009 there was a 47% increase.

Areas where poaching was most problematic were the Kruger National Park and the Limpopo and KwaZulu-Natal provinces.

The number of arrests has also increased by approximately 27.3% to 210 people, from the 165 people last year.
