Rhythm City ‘nicked’ it

2011-09-17 18:19

Designer Ephraim Molingoana is hopping mad at Rhythm City’s wardrobe department for allegedly stealing the design of his tailored denim jacket.

Molingoana, a former model whose design label Ephymol was launched in 2002, says the soapie “copied my garment without my acknowledgment and they didn’t even credit me for it”. The jacket was unveiled at the Ephymol summer collection earlier this year.

“A friend called me on the night (actor) David Genaro was wearing the jacket to congratulate me for dressing the cast. When I rushed to the TV I realised it was the exact same jacket, but it wasn’t mine or sourced from me,” says the angry fashion designer.

He immediately pointed his finger at David Tlale designer Andile Bhenya, who joined the soapie’s wardrobe division this year. However, Rhythm City’s public relations officer Matlapulana Ragoasha says Bhenya only designs for female actors.

The soapie’s head of wardrobe, Shile Nyathi says she had “no clue” about Molingoana’s design. “The inspiration came from the European hunting jacket and it was inspired by Denzel Washington in American Gangster.”

While angry, Molingoana has not yet called Rhythm City to lay a complaint, only claiming that the show was jeopardising his design partnership with a large retailer.
