Bafana Bafana and Free State Stars player Richard Henyekane was killed in a car crash last night in Bethlehem, Free State.

The 31-year-old striker “was travelling with four other passengers when they were involved in a tragic motor vehicle accident”, the football club said.

“He was the only one to lose his life in this incident.”

Henyekane was on loan to Stars from Mamelodi Sundowns at the time of his death.

He made 17 appearances in the Absa Premiership this season.

He also earned nine caps for Bafana Bafana since making his debut at the age of 26.

“We wish to say to the Henyekane family that they must know that we are with them at all times, and trust that they will put all their sorrows in the hands of God the Almighty in this difficult period,” Stars said.

“To the Stars family of fans, sponsors, supporters and others we believe that this is a period in which you will remain steadfast in praying for Henyekane’s teammates as they come to terms with this sad moment.”

Henyekane’s death comes just four months after the sudden passing of his brother, Joseph.

At the time of his death, the 30-year-old Joseph was playing for the local police football team to keep fit. The defender previously played for Golden Arrows and Mpumalanga Black Aces. He also played for the South African under-23 team but never made it to the senior team.
