Robber dies in N1 crash

2011-12-17 07:45

A suspected robber died and other was injured when their car overturned on the N1 highway.

Captain Pinky Tsinyane said the two travelling in a Navara bakkie allegedly robbed a business in Bronkhorstspruit east of Pretoria.

The police spotted the bakkie on the N1 north at around 3am. They pulled it over but it sped off. A high-speed chase ensued, she said.

The passenger in the bakkie started shooting at the police when they caught up with the vehicle. The police returned fire.

“The bakkie crashed into the barrier dividing the highway. One robber was found dead and other injured,” she said.

“It is not clear whether he died because of the accident or he was shot dead,” Tsinyane said from the scene.
She said the injured man was taken to the Steve Biko Academic Hospital in Pretoria.
