Robber escapes without jewels

2010-10-21 09:35

Police cordoned off a building in the Cape Town city centre this morning as they searched for a man who tried to rob a jewellery store.

“We searched the area and he’s not here,” Lieutenant Colonel Andre Traut said.

He said the owner of the store, at 118 St George’s Mall, had been opening up the shop shortly before 9am, when a man with a gun confronted him and forced him into the shop.

Once inside, the owner managed to get away via a fire escape, leaving the robber in the building.

“A single shot was fired,” said Traut. “Nothing was taken and no-one was injured.”

The would-be robber had not been able to get access to the “main part” of the store.

Police, who arrived in force, were still on the scene mid-morning, but Traut said it was clear the robber had escaped.
